High Frequency

The high frequency I refer to in this work is all about LIGHT – something that most of us take for granted and rarely even think about. As an artist, I think about it a lot. Light has everything to do with color, and color is essential to my art and my creative process.

Scientists think of light a little differently. I know this is true because my husband teaches physics and astronomy (two of my special interests) and he is my in-house expert. I get to ask him all the things I want to know about how the universe works. The most frustrating part for me is that science doesn't know everything yet!

Science defines light as “a form of electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength detectable by the human eye. It has properties of both waves and particles and exists in tiny energy packets called photons. Each wave has a wavelength or frequency.” When we see a particular color, we see a specific wavelength of light reflected back to our eyes and interpreted by our brain.

What I DO know and understand is color. My favorite class in college was color theory. I was trained to understand the science of color and the way it is created through photons of light. Perhaps more importantly, I learned how colors interact with each other, and how we interact with color.

Sometimes with just the right color combination, you create magic. “High Frequency” is one of those pieces for me. Even though the frequency of light doesn't change very much from color to color, the effects can have major impact on us and our mood.

That's why you would paint a bedroom green or blue versus red or orange if you want to promote restful sleep. Frequency of light has a huge impact on your body even if you are not conscious of it. These color theories are applied throughout our world, impacting the colors chosen for hospitals, schools, or any public building you can imagine.

Also, in nearly every culture throughout human history, light has been considered a vital source for healing, spiritual journeys and enlightenment. Chi, the energy of life itself, is defined as the balance (yin and yang) of electro-magnetic energy that flows through everything in creation. Sounds a lot like light to me!

I believe there are some very smart scientists, probably several of them on the autism spectrum, working out the questions that remain unanswered in the universe. I hope that someday God will take me on a guided tour and reveal all its mysteries!

In the meantime, creating with color brings me so much joy, and I hope you will find that same joy that I did in “High Frequency.”
